Hong Kong Observatory has enhanced its satellite imagery services with a new sulfur dioxide product derived from data collected by the Himawari geostationary satellite. Using a specialized color enhancement, the imagery reveals the distribution of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere, allowing users to track volcanic ash and sulfur dioxide plumes from eruptions across East Asia. The new product expands the Observatory’s satellite monitoring capabilities by providing more detailed atmospheric composition information to support aviation safety, environmental monitoring, and hazard awareness.
