Regional Flood WG Meet-ups: Progress on Flash Flood Management

Flash floods remain among the world’s most dangerous natural hazards, demanding timely forecasts and effective decision support. Join the upcoming EOTEC DevNet regional flood meet-ups July 8 and 9 to hear experts share operational approaches from around the world — from innovations in early warning systems to regional and local assessment models that are helping protect lives, infrastructure, and communities.

Each regional session will feature a short global case together with regional cases, followed by an interactive discussion on lessons learned, operational needs, and capacity development priorities.

Confirmed presentations include:

  • Global case: Hydrologic Research Center’s Flash Flood Guidance System, which helps forecasters at National Meteorological and Hydrological Services issue timely and reliable flash flood watches and warnings.
  • Regional flash flood cases
    • Assessing flash flood risks to urban infrastructure in Houston, Texas
    • Assessing the extent of flash flood zones in Grand-Bassam, Cote d’Ivoire, using Google Earth Engine and VIKOR
    • Risk modeling in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
    • Flash flood forecasting at the pan-European scale within CEMS-Floods EFAS
