Hurricane Melissa’s Impact on Jamaica’s Nighttime Lights

When Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on October 28, 2025 as a Category 5 storm, it left a trail of devastation – including island-wide power outages that continued for more than 2 weeks. This nighttime image from the VIIRS instrument aboard the NASA/NOAA NOAA-21 satellite highlights the scale of the disruption.

Visit NASA Earthdata to see a Black Marble Nighttime Blue/Yellow Composite showing stark differences between October 19 and November 13: many inland communities remain dark, reflecting ongoing outages.

Originally developed by the U.S. Naval Research Lab and now widely used in NASA applications, the Black Marble product visualizes nighttime lights in yellow and cloud patterns in blue. These before-and-after images reveal how disasters, fires, and other major events change patterns of human activity and illumination over time.
