Rainfall Transforms Australia Desert

Two satellite views of central Australia show the dramatic transformation of the Alice Springs region after weeks of heavy rainfall in early 2026. The image at left was taken January 21, 2026 before the rains. The image at right was taken March 10, 2026 after the rains. Both were captured by NASA’s Terra satellite. Typically known as the arid “Red Centre,” the landscape appears unusually green as water fills dry riverbeds and vegetation rapidly emerges. These unusually wet conditions — among the heaviest February rainfall on record — also led to flooding and disruptions on the ground, including rising river levels and flash floods.
