This visualisation, produced with data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), shows surface air temperature anomalies for August 2026 across Europe, Africa, and parts of the Arctic and Asia.
According to C3S, August 2026 was the warmest August on record globally, with a global-average surface air temperature of 16.96°C, 0.85°C above the 1991-2020 average for the month. In Europe, the average temperature over land in August 2026 was 20.26°C, 1.10°C above the same baseline, making it the fourth-warmest August on record.
Warmer-than-average conditions were reported across large parts of western and southern Europe, in excess of 3°C in France and Italy, while cooler-than-average conditions prevailed across parts of northern and eastern Europe.
Outside Europe, warm anomalies in boreal summer were most pronounced across northern Canada, Siberia, central Asia, the western United States and east-central Africa.
