EOTEC and partners to highlight EO capacity building innovations at GEO Global Forum

To advance dialogue on Open Data, Open Knowledge, EOTEC and partners will contribute to a community event at the GEO Global Forum, taking place May 5-8 in Rome, Italy.

Titled Energizing EO Capacity Building on Flood and Drought Management: the Nexus between SDGs 11 and 17, the May 5 afternoon session will focus on the intersection of Sustainable Development Goal targets 11.5 and 17.6. These relate to reducing the impact of disasters on people (11.5) and using partnerships to advance the goals (17.6).

Ten organizations collaborated to develop the presentation, sharing their diverse experiences with EO-related partnerships for floods and droughts. Their innovations relate to fostering access to tools and data; knowledge sharing and learning; community building; and collaboration models.

Scheduled presenters are Lawrence Friedl, Director of Engagement in the NASA Earth Science to Action program and co-chair of EO4SDG, and Martyna Stelmaszczuk-Górska of EO College and the EOTEC Secretariat.

Other session co-organizers and contributors include: GEOGLOWS, Digital Earth Pacific, UNOOSA/UN-SPIDER, the SDGs Today of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Eurisy, EARSC, the Beyond Center for EO Research and Remote Sensing, and WMO’s Integrated Drought Management Program.

The Forum marks 20 years of GEO (the Group on Earth Observations) and seeks to catalyze further use of Earth Intelligence to empower decision-making and other actions in service of people and planet. GEO is a member of EOTEC’s Global Leadership Task Team.
