Terrestrial remote sensing of the atmosphere in Latin America. – Module 2: Atmospheric Aerosols.

Through the realization of several projects in joint collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Argentina has developed core knowledge in the field of remote sensing of the atmosphere. The purpose of the course is to provide Latin American participants with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and techniques in the field of terrestrial remote sensing of the atmosphere with an emphasis on environmental services and climate change.

In this second module, atmospheric aerosols will be addressed. In the first part of the course you will see what they are and what role they play in climate change and how they affect the radiative balance of the earth-atmosphere-sun system. Also, the interaction of light with matter will be analyzed and how it is measured from the optical point of view. Finally, participants will be introduced to sun photometers and Lidars, the types of lidars and products, and the LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) technique will be explained.
In the second part of the course, the uses of lidars in remote sensing of the atmosphere will be described, considering both commercial lidars and the SaverNet Network. The LIDAR signal, the inversion problem, inputs for inversion and synergy with sun photometers from the AERONET/NASA network will also be analyzed.

The course will be held online through the MODDLE platform of the Regional Training Center of the National Meteorological Service of Argentina (SMN). It will be divided into 2 weekly modules with an initial week of setting. It will also have an organizing committee for the content area and the technical area.

Successful completion of the course implies the attendance to the virtual synchronous meetings and the approval of the questionnaire of each module.
