Hail poses a significant threat across the mid-latitudes of South America, particularly within the Paraná and Río de la Plata Basins. The challenges of forecasting hail in these regions led to the development of a specialized forecasting tool designed to identify environments favorable for hail and severe convection. The initial version, created in 2015 by José Manuel Gálvez (WPC) and Néstor Santayana (INUMET), has since evolved into the Granizo Version 2 – Trial Algorithm (GR02T), released in 2019. GR02T is widely used across South America and has also demonstrated strong performance in the United States, Mexico, northern Central America, and the northern Caribbean. This session will provide an overview of the GR02T algorithm and practical guidance on interpreting and applying it to recent and real-time severe weather events, placing emphasis on satellite product applications for verification.
