The short-term course is specifically designed to meet the learning need for basic education in meteorology of the staff of the Consorzio Venezia Nuova, enrolled in the Operation Room and in charge to operate the MOdulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico (MOSE) barriers, a large infrastructure built to preserve Venice and its lagoon during extremely high water events (Acqua Alta) occurring under particular weather conditions.
The course is the result of a collaboration between the Regional Environmental Protection Agency of Veneto, and the Institute of BioEconomy (CNR-IBE) which is also designated as WMO Regional Training Centre in Italy, with the technical support of the Laboratory for Environmental Modelling and Monitoring for Sustainable Development (LaMMA), and of the Venice Center for High Tides (CPSM-VE).
The main objective of the online course is to provide the audience with the basic skills and knowledge required to understand large-scale weather conditions, acquire knowledge of atmospheric phenomena and processes in marine/coastal environments, interpret weather forecasts, recognize hazardous conditions leading to unusually high water in the Venice Lagoon, in order to increase their capability to react in an emergency.
