The Earth Observation Training, Education, and Capacity Development Network, EOTEC DevNet, is a network of networks, created in 2021 to bring the power of satellite-derived Earth information to more users around the globe.
Our aim: Make Earth observation-related capacity building more accessible and relevant. EOTEC DevNet’s goal is to increase the use of Earth information in decision-making on climate change and disaster management.
Our approach: Improve cooperation and coordination among national, regional, and global institutions providing capacity building related to Earth observations. We seek to fill gaps, leverage resources, and reduce duplication of effort. We also foster exchange and knowledge sharing, and promote best practices on training needs assessment.
Our thematic focus: Sustainable development outcomes related to disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation and mitigation. This work is aligned with 3 major frameworks: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
How does EOTEC DevNet work?
Regional structures: Regional Communities of Practice. They will drive EOTEC DevNet’s work and set priorities based on local regional needs. Each Community of Practice is run by a Task Team. Technical inputs are addressed by thematic working groups. We are currently scaling up in four regions: Africa, Americas, Asia/Oceania, and Europe.
Global structures: Leadership Team, Global Task Team, and Secretariat. They support the start-up of the communities of practice and connect them to global subject matter experts as needed. They also provide infrastructure support; for example, hosting the EOTEC DevNet website and capacity development resources.

How can you participate in EOTEC DevNet?
Join a Community of Practice!
We seek motivated professionals for the regional Communities of Practice.
Task Team Members: Professionals engaged in capacity development are needed for the regional task teams. Their work centers on information-sharing, priority setting, development of technical tools trackers, and regional needs assessment. These groups meet 4 times each year and work offline in between meetings.
Thematic Working Group Members: Subject matter experts are needed to support thematic working groups. They will provide technical inputs on themes tailored to the needs of each region. Currently, we are establishing thematic working groups on flooding and drought in each of the 4 regions. These groups meet twice yearly and work offline in between meetings on technical resources and tools.
