Insights: AI Meets EO Education Webinar
More than 100 educators, trainers, and EO practitioners joined our Nov. 12 webinar to share their views on artificial intelligence (AI) in education and hear from Google and European Space Agency (ESA) collaborators about their work on AI tools to support the way we teach and learn about Earth observation.
A Strong Lineup of Innovators
Titled “AI Meets EO Education: Smarter Content for Smarter Learning,” the webinar was organized by EOTEC DevNet, EO College, and the GenAI Community of Practice. It featured live demonstrations of emerging tools, practical examples of AI-enabled content development, and discussions on responsible use. Presenters included:Â
- Anisha Chaudury, on Google AI for Education’s Learn Your Way tool
- Àlex R. Atrio, of Pi School, a collaborator on the European Space Agency’s Earth Virtual Environment (EVE), open-source large language model designed specifically for Earth observation
- Ravi Kapur of Imperative Space and Robert Eckardt of EO College, collaborators on ESA’s GDA Knowledge Hub, an interactive digital library of EO solutions for development
What We Explored
Participants saw how AI can support:
- rapid content creation
- localized examples and translations
- interactive exercises
- more structured and engaging lessons
- easier explanations of complex EO concepts
Discussions also underscored the importance of human oversight and thoughtful integration into pedagogy.
What Participants Told Us
During the session, we asked attendees how they feel about using AI in education and training. The feedback revealed a striking pattern: broad curiosity, cautious optimism, and a strong appetite for practical guidance.
Participants described AI as “promising,” “refreshing,” “faster,” and “a great help in structuring lessons and saving teaching time.” Many noted how AI accelerates brainstorming and helps them get started when content development feels overwhelming.
At the same time, several respondents called AI “double-edged,” “mixed,” or “exciting yet a little worrisome.” This balance reflects a healthy skepticism of both the opportunities and the challenges ahead.
The clearest message: participants want more showcases, more tools, and more opportunities to practice – reinforcing the need for continued dialogue and hands-on learning.
🙏 We extend our sincere thanks to all presenters and participants for helping make this an engaging and thought-provoking session.
