Madhesh Province, a region of Nepal better known for flooding, has experienced a catastrophic drought. While devastating floods and landslides across South Asia dominate the news, a slower, quieter, but no less catastrophic disaster unfolded in 2025 in the southeastern plains of Nepal, widely known as Nepal’s Grain Basket. The Government of Nepal officially declared a drought emergency in the Madhesh Province on 24 July.
